Jarot Indarto

Jarot Indarto, SP, MT, MSc, PhD, is the Director of Food and Agriculture at the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) in Indonesia. In this role, he oversees the formulation, synchronization, and evaluation of national policies in food and agriculture, ensuring alignment with Indonesia’s broader development goals. His leadership focuses on strengthening food security, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and integrating environmental considerations into national planning.

Jarot has served at Bappenas for more than 24 years, holding various positions including planner and senior administrator before assuming his current directorship in 2023. He is also a lecturer at Politeknik STIA LAN Jakarta, where he contributes to academic training in public administration and development planning.

Academically, Jarot holds a Bachelor’s degree in Soil Sciences from Bogor Agricultural University, an MSc in Environmental and Infrastructure Planning from Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (Netherlands), and a PhD in Environmental Economics from Hiroshima University (Japan). His research and professional interests include deforestation, sustainable forest management, agricultural expansion, and the valuation of natural capital.

Through his work at Bappenas, Jarot continues to play a pivotal role in shaping Indonesia’s agricultural and food systems toward sustainability and resilience.
