Warren King

Senior Scientist
Digital Agriculture

Warren King is a Senior Scientist with the New Zealand Bioeconomy Science Institute (formerly AgResearch), where he works at the interface of pastoral livestock systems, remote sensing, and digital agriculture. His research focuses on improving how pasture-based livestock systems are measured, monitored, and managed using satellite data, field observations, and decision-support tools.

His work centres on developing scalable methods to assess pasture biomass, quality, and composition across complex landscapes, with particular emphasis on how these factors influence grazing systems, animal performance, and farm system productivity. He integrates remote sensing, soil and climate data, and ground measurements to improve the accuracy of agricultural activity data and greenhouse gas emissions estimates, and to support more resilient, climate-aware livestock production systems.

Warren has worked across a wide range of pastoral environments and production systems, with research and advisory experience in New Zealand, Australia, China, India, and Armenia. He works closely with farmers, industry groups, and government agencies to translate scientific advances into practical tools for farm management and policy.

He is a former President of the New Zealand Grassland Association and maintains a strong interest in strengthening the scientific and practical foundations of pasture-based livestock systems.
