Technology/ Innovation: Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) Hydroponic System
NFT is a hydroponic system that recirculates water containing plant nutrients in a thin sheet of flowing water. In NFT, plants are grown on top of this flow, while their roots are exposed to the nutrient-rich stream for about 15 minutes. The water is then recirculated through a series of tubes back into another reservoir for recycling. Typically, NFT systems use about 50% recycled water, ensuring a constant supply of fresh nutrient solution to the roots.
Overview of Technology/ Innovation:
ADB supports initiatives that advance sustainable development, climate resilience, food security, and inclusive economic growth. In alignment with these priorities, the proposed intervention seeks to integrate NFT hydroponic systems and other climate-smart agriculture technologies within ADB-supported project frameworks. Financial assistance may be mobilized for the establishment of strategically located demonstration farms in key metropolitan areas in the Philippines to pilot and validate the technology under urban and peri-urban conditions. The initiative may further include the commissioning of comprehensive impact assessments to evaluate yield performance, water-use efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and long-term economic viability at scale. Findings from these evaluations will inform replication strategies and guide the broader deployment of NFT systems and other climate-smart agriculture technologies across suitable regions.
