Shenggen Fan

Professor Shenggen Fan is a Chair Professor at China Agricultural University and Dean of the Academy of Global Food Economics and Policy (AGFEP). From 2009 to 2019, he served as Director General of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).

He has led extensive and influential research in public investment, global food and nutrition security, agricultural and rural development, poverty reduction, and agri-food system transformation. His work has had significant policy impact, including providing strong empirical evidence supporting increased rural road investment in India. He has also advised governments in China, Vietnam, and several African countries on food and agricultural policy.

He serves on multiple boards and advisory bodies, including as a member of the Integrated Partnership Board of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), and as a board member of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), the Global FoodBanking Network (GFN), the Global Development Network (GDN), and the University of Central Asia. He is also a member of the advisory committees of the World Food Prize and the Oxford Martin School.

He is a Fellow of the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA) and an Honorary Life Member of the International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE). In 2006, he received the Outstanding Alumni Award from the Department of Applied Economics at the University of Minnesota and the university-wide Distinguished Leadership Award for Internationals. He is also a recipient of the Hunger Hero Award presented by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon (2014) and the Fudan Management Excellence Award (2017).
